Finding a Lawyer in Maine
You may be able to find a lawyer by contacting one of the Maine legal services groups that provides free or low-cost services. They are listed on our Helpful Organizations page. Some of these groups can help you only if you have a low income; others do not have income limits. If you use our Search Page, you may get better information about who can help you with your specific problem. Answer the county, age and income questions to get the best information.
- If none of those groups can help you, look in the yellow pages of your phone book. They list lawyers by the types of cases they handle. Or talk to friends or relatives to get the names of lawyers they trust.
- The The Maine Lawyer Referral and Information Service helps many people find a standard-fee attorney appropriate to their legal problems. One $25 will cover up to three referrals, if needed, to attorneys who will not charge for the first half-hour of a consultation.
- Some commercial websites can help you find lawyers with particular expertise. Try Martindale Hubble or FindLaw's West Legal Directory. You may want to look at FindLaw's tips on finding a lawyer. Be cautious, though, about shopping for a lawyer online. "Too good to be true" should be a warning sign. .
